The Net Readiness Position is a person's evidenced readiness measured against the readiness their specific transition actually requires. It is the construct that makes readiness comparable across fundamentally different transitions, converting an absolute score into a decision-grade judgment of sufficiency.

Definition and Scope
The Net Readiness Position (NRP) is defined as Evidence-Based Readiness minus the readiness a transition demands: a surplus, balance, or deficit expressed on a common scale from roughly minus one hundred to plus one hundred. Where Evidence-Based Readiness states how much substantiated readiness a person has, the Net Readiness Position states whether that amount is enough for the transition in front of them. It is, in effect, readiness after the bill has been deducted.
The construct exists because readiness is not meaningful in the absolute. A person is never simply ready; they are ready, or not, for something specific, and that something varies enormously in what it demands. The Net Readiness Position absorbs that variation by netting the demand out of the supply, leaving a single quantity whose meaning is constant: positive is surplus, near zero is exactly adequate, negative is shortfall.
Because the demand term is conditioned on the transition, the Net Readiness Position applies wherever the discipline does — retirement, the sale of a business, an inheritance or estate settlement, divorce, relocation, and sudden wealth — and produces values that can be compared across all of them. A Net Readiness Position of plus ten means the same thing for a business sale as for a retirement, even though the underlying readiness and the underlying demand are entirely different.

Why a Net Position
Two people can hold identical evidenced readiness and stand in completely different positions, because they face transitions of different difficulty. Reporting readiness without netting the demand invites the most common error in transition planning: treating a number that is adequate for an easy transition as if it were adequate for a hard one. The net position closes that loophole by refusing to report readiness except in relation to what it must cover.
The framing also changes the conversation from accumulation to sufficiency. A person encouraged to maximize readiness in the abstract has no stopping rule and no way to know when they are done. A person shown their net position has both: the target is zero or above, and the distance to it is explicit. Sufficiency, not maximization, is the honest goal of preparation, and the net position is the quantity that makes sufficiency measurable.
Finally, a net position is portable. Because it has been purged of the idiosyncrasies of any one transition, it can be tracked over time, compared across a person's successive transitions, and aggregated across a population without smuggling in the confound that some transitions are simply harder than others.
The Two Quantities It Reconciles
The Net Readiness Position is the reconciliation of two quantities that are meaningless apart. The first is the readiness a person supplies — their Evidence-Based Readiness, the substantiated documentation, liquidity, structure, contingency, alignment, and timing they bring. The second is the readiness the transition demands, which rises with the transition's complexity: the more entangled, irreversible, many-handed, and identity-altering the transition, the more readiness it requires before it can be navigated well.
Holding either quantity alone produces a familiar mistake. Attending only to supply produces people who are proud of preparation that does not meet their situation. Attending only to demand produces people who are intimidated by difficulty they are in fact equipped for. The net position is the disciplined refusal to look at one without the other.

The Net Readiness Position is read by sign first and magnitude second. A clear positive position means the readiness supplied exceeds the readiness demanded with room to spare. A position near zero means supply and demand are roughly matched, leaving little cushion against the unexpected. A negative position means the transition demands more readiness than the person currently has.

The Frontier Intuition
The Net Readiness Position has a clean geometric reading. Imagine readiness on one axis and transition complexity on the other. There is a line across that plane along which readiness exactly meets demand — the readiness frontier. Points above the line are surplus positions; points below are deficits. The Net Readiness Position is simply the signed distance from a person's point to that frontier.
This picture clarifies why the same readiness can be safe or dangerous depending on the transition. Moving rightward along the complexity axis raises the frontier, so a fixed readiness that sat comfortably above the line for a simple transition can fall below it for a complex one without the person's readiness having changed at all. The net position tracks that movement; a raw readiness score cannot.
It also clarifies the goal of preparation. Closing a deficit means moving the point back above the frontier, which can be done either by raising readiness (moving up) or by reducing the transition's demand (moving left). The discipline contains more than one kind of gap, and confusing them is a frequent error. The Readiness Gap nets belief out of readiness: it compares how ready a person feels to how ready the evidence shows they are. The Net Readiness Position nets demand out of readiness: it compares how ready a person is to how ready the transition requires them to be. One is about calibration of self-knowledge; the other is about sufficiency for a task.
The two are independent and both are necessary. A person can be perfectly calibrated — a Readiness Gap near zero — and still hold a large readiness deficit, because being accurate about one's readiness says nothing about whether that readiness is enough. Conversely, a person can hold a comfortable surplus and still be badly miscalibrated, believing themselves far more or less ready than they are.
Read together, the two locate a person precisely: whether they have enough readiness, and whether they know it. The combinations are instructive — an unknown surplus wastes capable people through deferral, while an unknown deficit walks confident people into transitions they are not equipped for.
Comparability Across Heterogeneous Transitions
The signature contribution of the Net Readiness Position is comparability. Because the demand term has been removed, two net positions can be set side by side even when the underlying transitions share nothing. This is what allows a household with several transitions in view — a business sale, an approaching retirement, an aging parent's estate — to triage them honestly, attending first to the one whose net position is most negative rather than the one that is loudest or largest.
Comparability also makes the construct useful above the level of the individual. A population of net positions can be summarized without the distortion that some of its members faced harder transitions than others, because that difficulty has already been netted out. The discipline is careful, however, not to over-claim comparability. Two equal net positions can still differ in the kind of preparation they imply, because they can arise from different combinations of supply and demand. A Net Readiness Position is not fixed. Early in a transition's life, both terms are soft: readiness is still being built and the transition's demand is still coming into focus.
